History/Background/Education Kathleen grew up traveling on Starships with her parents who were both Starfleet officers. Her mother, a Haliian, was a Starfleet medic and her father was a physicist. When she was old enough, Kathleen chose not to enroll at Starfleet Academy, choosing instead to settle on solid ground for a while. She moved to Earth and studied veterinary medicine. Kathleen had a particular affinity for veterinary medicine. Haliians tend to have some empathic abilities. While Kathleen does not possess any strong empathic abilities with sentient beings, she does however, seem to have a special knack for soothing animals, which is attributed to her Haliian heritage.
Kathleen adored her career working with those deemed ‘pets’ on Earth. However, as time wore on, she felt the draw of the stars, her birthplace as it was, calling out to her once more. She wanted to travel to new worlds and decided at the rather mature age of 30 to enroll at Starfleet Academy. Her parents, who had since retired and settled on Halii, encouraged her to pursue her dreams. So even though she was by far one of the oldest cadets to enroll at Starfleet, Kathleen did not falter in her pursuit of her studies.
Though she loved her career in veterinary science, Kathleen chose to specialize in the related field of zoology when she entered Starfleet. Following her graduation, Kathleen was assigned to a science research base for the past 3 years. While she was thrilled to be back in space, she wanted more. She wanted to find new places and truly travel through the ‘skies’ to unexplored territories. Therefore, when she heard of the Crudaigh’s new mission, Kathleen requested a transfer and was ecstatic when she was given her new assignment. She anxiously awaits what new and exotic species the crew of the Crudaigh will encounter on their voyage.
Just for the record: The key difference between 24th century veterinary medicine and other fields relates to whether the ‘patient’ is deemed sentient or sapient (these two terms have been bantered back and forth through the centuries of Star Trek. The most current way of distinguishing an animal from a species seems to be the use of the term Sentient, though the line between sentience is a bit grey in many areas!)
Personality Profile:
Kathleen has a very bubbly personality and enjoys talking to both people and animals. She is a fairly easy-going person, but also very driven in both her career and her own hobbies and ambitions. She has found it difficult at times to realize that she is old enough to have mothered many of her superior officers, but she is slowly coming to terms with this fact of life.
As part Haliian, she has a special ability to almost communicate with animals, due to the Haliian empathic heritage. She cannot however use this minimal ability with regard to sentient beings. However, she can at times pick up on a strong emotion around her, which can at times influence her own mood or actions. She cannot pinpoint the emotion, nor its origin and often does not realize she has been affected by someone else’s strong emotion until after the fact has passed.
Other Personal Details:
Of course Kathleen has a few pets of her own which she will be bringing with her onboard the Crudaigh. The pets will be introduced through the role-play when the time is right.
Role-Play Sample:Please post a 1-3 paragraph role-play sample as your character. It can be about anything you choose, but it must be in character
Sketch pad in hand, Kathleen settled into the least invasion location possible on the planet. She was waiting for the arrival of the new animal. After hours of observation by the science staff on the ship, someone had spotted the animal and upon further investigation, no one had been able to identify it. So Kathleen was sent in, hopefully to find and try and identify the creature if possible.
The small rock on which she sat was far from comfortable, but she refused to move. This was where the animal had been spotted before, and if she stayed here long enough, she was sure she would see it. After what felt like forever, Kathleen was not disappointed. The small, furry, four-legged creature moved slowly and quietly into the clearing. Immediately, Kathleen tried to identify the animal as any number of things. It wasn’t quite like anything she had ever seen before, but it could be some subspecies of a known animal or it could be a new species entirely. The only way to know would be to observe and if possible to run some minimally invasion tests. All of which would take time and patience, something Kathleen had and abundance of.
She began to sketch the creature on her special artist’s PADD, hoping to note any distinguishing features that she could refer back to in the future. As she looked up, the animal seemed to turn and look in her direction. Its eyes seemed to lock with hers, almost as though it knew she was there. Kathleen froze, not wanting to alarm the being. She only let out her breath, when the creature turned back to the small stream and began to lap at the water. If nothing else, Kathleen thought, the animal was gorgeous.
