Name: Matthew Simmons
Preferred Rank: Ensign
Position: Science officer, geology specialist
Species: Human
Age: 34
Physical DescriptionHeight, weight, hair color, eye color, any distinguishing features Of medium height and average build, Matt has brown hair and brown eyes.
Birthplace: Cos, a planet not far from Romulus, where there is a Federation outpost.
Hobbies: Matt enjoys programming holonovels, and running them, mostly mystery stories based on literature from the last five or six centuries.
Family on board? Matt has no family left anywhere, so definitely not!
History/Background/Education: Born on a Federation outpost on the planet Cos with two Starfleet Officers as parents, it was perhaps always a done deal that Matt would enlist in the Academy at the first possible opportunity. His parents supported his desire to join Starfleet, and encouraged his flair for the sciences, helping him choose a geology focus to his studies.
Matt enjoyed his time at the Academy, but didn't make many friends there, spending most of his free time studying in the library. He graduated top of his class, but without the social experiences that many graduates had. He didn't mind; he was a fairly solitary soul who mostly enjoyed socialising with his family.
Two years ago, tragedy struck Matt when the ship his parents were both working on was attacked by rogue Romulan traders, and destroyed. Realising that he now had very little left in his life, he vowed to change his attitude to life and try and be more sociable, to make more friends and to make more of his life.
Because he has very little to keep him in the Alpha quadrant, this mission was a natural choice for him. His natural aptitude with all things geological made him a good pick for the job.
Personality Profile: Though he used to be a very quiet person, keeping himself to himself, since the death of his parents he has vowed to be a more out-going person. He's been doing quite well so far, and is looking forward to making new friends on this voyage.
Other Personal Details: None at present.
Any Special Notes: None at present.

So many tears. So much sorrow. So many cries of anguish, and sobs of despair. And in the middle of it all stood Matt Simmons, eyes dry and facing forward, looking at the memorial stone being placed into the wall at Stafleet Headquarters, just one more stone joining the hundreds of others in this garden of remembrance that marked those who had fallen in active service, protecting the Federation and all it stood for.
Matt was a long way back in the crowd. He couldn't make out any of the text on the stone, but he knew that there, somewhere, were the names he'd come here to honour.
Mom, Dad... I love you. Rest in peace.
The sobs around him seemed to grow in pitch as cermonial trumpets blared in old tunes of remembrance from the many planets that the crew of the USS Pittsburgh had come from. Matt didn't listen; none of that meant anything to him. The two people he loved more than anything in this galaxy were lost to him. He was all he had left.
The stone was sunk into place, and someone was placing wreaths of flowers around the base of the wall.
